Thrive With A Winter Routine

Ahhh wintertime. Lately it is hard to find certainty in our world, but one thing we can be sure of is the predictability of nature. These days, the natural world is withdrawing and embracing a long, dark season of slumber and dormancy - and we should embrace it too!

This is a good time to rest, reflect, hibernate, and refocus some of our energy inward. But if you find that the calm, slow nature of winter can seem a bit oppressive at times and leave you feeling stagnant or uninspired, it may be time to look at your seasonal routine.

Each season brings with it a unique set of qualities that can either soothe or challenge our fundamental ways of being. This is why some people love the heat of the summer while others can’t bear it, and why some can spend an entire winter playing in the snow while others only step outside if they must.

Use these tips to adapt your diet and lifestyle to better accommodate the changing season and ward off seasonally induced imbalances. And if you get off track, they will help you find your way back toward your body’s natural harmony.

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

When it is cold outside, we aren’t as thirsty. Dehydration weakens your immune system, so it is extra important to find delicious ways to make hydration a part of your day. Try keeping a thermos of warm water or herbal tea (non-caffeinated) with you throughout the day - and don’t forget to refill it frequently!

2. Get Up and Move!

Shake off winter sluggishness and aim to move your body for 20 minutes a day. Jump around, dance, stretch, or take a brisk walk (be sure to bundle up!) - whatever helps you get in your body and counteract the slow, heavy, winter energy.

3. Eat Warm Foods - and Don’t Forget the Spice!

Dry winter air means finding moisture in other places - like in your food! Soups, stews, and curries are all great for digestion ease and creating warmth. Add lots of warming spices (think black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, cardamom, cayenne, and turmeric) for an extra boost. Hard, dry foods make your body work extra hard - and if you can’t say no to your salad, be sure to toss in your dressing and let it marinate before enjoying.

4. Rest and Relaxation

It’s not a secret that a good night’s sleep can affect your physical and mental sense of wellness (just ask any parent of small children!). Winter is the time to accrue some extra hours in your sleep bank. Try to get to bed a little earlier, and leave all stimulants out of the bedroom (I’m looking at you, iPhone). During the day, try to spend a few minutes every hour or two to stop what you are doing, take a few deep breaths and be still for a minute. It’s a great way to check in with yourself and redirect your focus and energy if you have taken on any stress or tension.
